How to prove the link between your condition and your service

August 25, 2025

You can have a genuine, diagnosed condition and a stack of medical reports, but if you cannot prove a clear link back to your time in the ADF, your DVA claim will fail. DVA will not connect the dots for you. You have to provide them with the "Golden Thread."

This is the most critical concept in the DVA system. This article explains what it is and how to build one for your claim.

What is the "Golden Thread"?

The Golden Thread is the clear, logical, and evidence-based story that connects your time in service to the condition you have today. It is the strong, unbroken line that starts with an event or exposure in the ADF and ends with your current diagnosis.

It is the absolute foundation of every single successful DVA claim. Without it, you don't have a case.

The three strands of your thread

A strong Golden Thread is woven from three essential strands of evidence. You need all three.

  • 1. The In-Service Event. This is the starting point. It could be a specific injury, a period of strenuous duty, a traumatic event, or exposure to noise or chemicals. This must be documented somewhere in your service history.
  • 2. The Diagnosis. This is the formal confirmation from a qualified doctor or specialist that you currently have a specific condition. A vague note is not enough. It must be a clear diagnosis.
  • 3. The Link. This is the most crucial and often-missed strand. It is the medical opinion from a doctor that links your diagnosis back to your in-service event. It is the proof that your service caused or aggravated your condition.
Think of it like a detective's case. You need to present the DVA with a clear story, backed by undeniable proof, that leaves no room for doubt.

Where to find your evidence

Your evidence can come from a range of sources. The more you have to weave your thread, the stronger your claim will be. Key sources include the following.

  • Your complete service medical and personnel records.
  • Incident or accident reports.
  • Detailed reports from specialist doctors.
  • Personal diaries or calendars kept during service.
  • Witness statements from mates who saw what happened.

Weaving It all together

Simply having these documents is not enough. They need to be organised and presented to the DVA in a comprehensive submission that tells a clear and logical story.

This is where an expert advocate makes the difference. We are experts at finding the threads and weaving them into a powerful, unbreakable case designed for a successful outcome.
